Australia’s leading provider of travel insurance and emergency assistance, Cover-More, has confirmed they will provide cover for thousands of policyholders likely to be impacted by Hurricane Sandy across the east cost of the United States.

Cover-More’s customer service team has taken over 1000 calls from travellers about emergency assistance and what cover is available to them.
Over the next two weeks, Cover-More has over 11,500 policyholders in the US, with New York, Washington and Boston being some of the most popular travel destinations.
Cover-More spokesperson, David Ferguson, said Cover-More is confirming cover for this significant natural disaster for Australian travellers currently in the US and travellers expected to depart for affected areas of the US in the coming days and weeks. This applies to Cover-More policies purchased on or before 28 October 2012.
He said policyholders already travelling will be able to claim for additional expenses incurred due to cancelled accommodation and transport due to the hurricane, and for expenses incurred due to evacuation.
“Policyholders who have not yet departed for the US will be able to claim for either amendment or cancellation costs whichever is less, up to the limits available under their policy, if their travel plans or parts of their journey are directly affected by the hurricane.
“With thousands of flights grounded across the east coast, we want to reassure our customers that their Cover-More travel insurance policies will automatically be extended for the period they are stranded in the US. Please do not panic if your Cover-More travel insurance policy has, or is set to expire,” he said.
“Our 24 hour emergency assistance team is available to customers overseas who need medical and logistical help. Overnight this team received close to a hundred calls for help. We're currently helping several customers in New York City.
“We also have a number of people who were due to depart from the area but can’t as airports are closed. We are arranging additional accommodation for them and will look to assist with flights once airports re-open.
“Fortunately we have not had any reports of injuries yet.
“It is unexpected natural disasters like this that nobody can plan for, that makes having quality travel insurance so important. In 2010 we had the Icelandic volcano which stranded Australians across Europe and was the single biggest claims event in our 26 year history. Hurricane Sandy is shaping to up be another one of these catastrophic disasters that has the potential to significantly impact the lives and holidays of so many Australians,” he said.

For a quicker response to claims, Cover-More asks customers to keep documentation showing their original travel plans, including proof of pre-paid accommodation and transport, together with receipts for the new arrangements they make.
In the last year, Cover-More provided travel insurance to more than 1.6 million Australians, 205,000 of whom elected the US as their primary destination.
