Why do I need scuba diving travel insurance?

Before you (scuba) dive headfirst into an underwater holiday, it’s important to consider adequate cover for your adventure.

Scuba diving can be risky, so it’s important your trip insurance includes cover for your planned activities. If it’s not, you could be left picking up the bill if an accident or injury occurs.

Travel insurance with scuba diving cover could help cover any unexpected overseas medical costs or additional expenses associated with your dive, plus amendments or cancellation costs for prepaid scuba diving activities.

When comparing scuba diving travel insurance cover, it’s important to understand if scuba diving is an automatically covered activity or if you need to take out additional diving travel insurance to be covered. Pay special attention to the conditions surrounding the cover, too, such as maximum ocean depths and whether a qualified diving instructor needs to be in attendance.

Does Cover-More offer diving travel insurance cover?

At Cover-More, we know our customers love adventure-filled holidays. This is why we offer varied levels of scuba diving cover so you can find the best scuba diving travel insurance cover for you.

    Cover option 1

We automatically include 80+ adventure sports activities in all our domestic and international travel insurance plans and this includes scuba diving.

If you plan on diving up to a maximum of 30 metres with a diving school or qualified instructor, this automatically included option may be suitable for your holiday.

    Cover option 2

Are you planning a more advanced dive? If you’re diving to a maximum depth of between 30-50 metres below the surface, you will need to include our Adventure Activities Cover in your policy for our scuba diving travel insurance cover to apply.

However, this scuba diving cover will only apply if you are diving under the direction of an accredited dive marshal, instructor, or guide, or, if you are qualified, you are diving within the guidelines of the relevant diving or training agency or organisation and not diving alone.

The relevant scuba diving qualifications for our Adventure Activities Cover are:

    • BSAC Sports Diver – 35 metres
    • BSAC Dive Leader – 50 metres
    • PADI Advanced Open Water – 30 metres
    • PADI Dive Master – 40 metres
    • PADI Deep Dive Speciality – 40 metres
    • SSI Advanced Open Water – 30 metres
    • SSAC Sports Diver – 35 metres
    • SSAC Master Diver – 50 metres

    Cover option 3

If you’re a seasoned scuba diver and want to bring your own scuba equipment on your holiday, our Adventure Activities+ Cover can provide cover for the same diving criteria as per our Adventure Activities Cover above plus includes bonus cover for your equipment.

For more information on equipment cover, see our scuba equipment question below.

Please read the PDS for full details and conditions on our scuba diving travel insurance cover before deciding if its suitable for you.

Can I get Cover-More's dive insurance for Australia? Or only overseas?

Good news – our scuba diving travel insurance cover is available on all our domestic and international travel insurance plans. This means we could provide cover for your scuba dive whether you’re planning to dive on an Australian holiday or an overseas trip.

As stated above, scuba diving is one of many adventure activities we automatically include in our travel insurance plans, as long as you’re only diving up to 30 metres and with a diving school or qualified instructor.

If you’re planning a more advanced dive of a maximum depth of between 30-50 metres below the surface, you will need to include our Adventure Activities Cover in your policy (and meet the requirements) for our scuba diving travel insurance cover to apply. This cover can be added to any of our domestic or international travel insurance plans. Please read the list of qualifications required for our Adventure Activities Cover and Adventure Activities+ Cover to apply in the question above under “Cover option 2” or in the PDS.

For all conditions applicable to our dive insurance cover for Australia and abroad, please read the PDS.
