Nothing gets Australians excited like a bit of healthy competition, which is why the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, which takes place every Boxing Day, garners so much attention. If you want to check out this event, you should plan a trip to either Sydney or Hobart on the big day.

An historic race

For 68 years, some of the best sailors from around the world have been competing in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. The course runs for 628 nautical miles, from Sydney's famous harbour all the way to Hobart, the beautiful coastal capital of Tasmania.

This year's race will see 97 yachts competing, with 22 international entrants. Much of the focus is on Wild Oats XI, a 100-foot Australian Maxis that has made a name for itself in various sailing competitions.

More than just a race

Whether you choose to watch the start of the race in Sydney or see the boats cross the finish line in Hobart, you'll have plenty to do with the rest of your holiday. Sydney is a hub of excitement, with sporting venues, live music, a wild nightlife and heaps of restaurants to make for a memorable getaway.

Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, is a charming port city that is a magnet for artists and craftsman. As Australia's second-oldest city, Hobart has some of the most magnificent architecture, plus plenty of museums, restaurants and adventure opportunities nearby.

If you can extend your stay through to the New Year, you'll be in for a special treat. Every year, the city hosts the Taste Festival, a culinary celebration that will satisfy any foodie.
