If you have ever taken a long haul flight, then you know the importance of having a snack (or five!) on hand to settle your rumbling stomach. Airline food is rarely reliable or palatable, and the snacks you find on the road are often unhealthy.

It helps to pack yourself snacks that are not only healthy and convenient , but are foods that you actually enjoy eating and that will satiate your hunger. Whether it's 2 in the morning or 2pm when your appetite kicks in, there are some foolproof snacks that you should bring with you.

Fresh or Dried Fruit

If you choose fresh fruit, choose something firm like an apple or an orange. They are protected by the peel and instantly refreshing.  Pack them in a Ziploc bag with paper towels for a quick clean-up and place to store the peels/core. For dried fruits, opt for something with a lot of flavour, like dried cherries, so you get the nutrients but don't skimp on taste.

Trail Mix

A long-time favourite of campers and hikers, trail mix can serve double duty on a long flight. It's high-protein, high-energy and very convenient. You can buy pre-mixed versions or create your own favourite blend of ingredients. Put in as many chocolate chips as you want and all you'll need to bring it with you is small bag—no utensils or napkins needed!

Vegetables & Hummus

This option is low in calories, almost odourless and chock full of vitamins. Vegetables will keep you very healthy in the long-term but in the short term (your travel time) they will help with digestion and keep your immune system at the top of its game. Make sure your dip follows the air travel restrictions for liquids, or plan to buy it once you're through security.

Cheese & Crackers

Cheese is a savoury, satisfying and filling option for a carry-on snack. As long as you opt for a smell-free variety, cheese and crackers makes for a quick and easy pack-and-go choice. Try string cheese or Babybel for pre-packaged cheese you can pack for the trip.

Bagel & Cream Cheese

One of the only options on the list that you'll find in an airport, a bagel with cream cheese is a great go-to option if you didn't have time to pack something before you left. Bagels are high in fibre and carbs, which means you will feel full for a long time. And, because carbs stimulate serotonin production, they can help lessen anxiety and promote sleep if you're a nervous flier.

Instant Oatmeal Packs

It's hot, it's free and it's easy to make. Just ask for a cup of hot water from the flight attendant and you'll have a cosy, warm bowl of oatmeal to indulge in without paying through the nose for a prepared meal. On top of being immensely mobile, oatmeal is also high in fibre and protein which will keep your stomach from rumbling for hours. Oatmeal too boring for you? Try adding trail mix or dried fruit to keep it interesting.

Things to Avoid

There are some things you need to avoid at all costs when packing snacks for a road trip, flight, train ride, or boat ride:

  • Big packages
  • Stinky food
  • Allergy triggers
  • Long-exposure/Non-rot
  • No utensils needed
  • Not messy/drippy
