Here’s what our travel insurance with adventure activities cover offers you
We cover what we say we will, so have a quick look at the tables below to see what’s covered, what‘s not and the cover limits.
You should also peek at the Policy Disclosure Statement (PDS) – it’s the source of truth when it comes to our limits, exclusions, and conditions. Yes, it might sound dull (it is a bit) but you need to read it to help you choose the best travel insurance including adventure sports for you and what you’ll be getting up to on your trip.

*Limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions apply. Please read the PDS for all the details.
Uncover more: what you should know before you go
Wherever you end up cruising, go into it with your eyes open.
Cruises can be your boarding pass to relaxation. (Hello, stops at Bliss Bay, Chill-out Cove and Feet Up Fjord!) But if the tide turns and you become sick or injured, your luggage goes on a trip of its own, or you miss a shore excursion, it can be expensive to make the situation right. But there’s no need to stress about the unknown — that’s why we’re here. Caring about you is what we do.
Our Cover-More Cruise Cover can protect you against onboard medical expenses, a worst-case medical evacuation, the cost of replacement luggage and even trip cancellation, up to the cancellation amount you’ve included in your policy.
Yes, our travel insurance for cruising lets you chart the waters ahead with confidence, knowing you’ve got us – an experienced crew – behind you, always.
For starters, you’ll want to get a quote for a policy with cover for cruises included by either clicking on one of our orange quote buttons at the top and bottom of this page, or by calling us for a chat on 1300 72 88 22.
But before you do buy our cruise travel insurance cover, make sure you read the PDS to ensure a Cover-More policy is right for you.
Next, when you’re looking at our quote box, there are a few steps to follow to get the right cover for you:
- In the ‘Where are you going?’ section: If your cruise is overseas, you’ll need to select the country or region you’re going to – or if you’re going all over (again, lucky you!), select ‘Anywhere in the world’. If it's an Australian cruise you’re taking, choose ‘Domestic cruise’ (not ‘Domestic’). You’ll then be offered an international plan. This may sound a little odd, but you’ll need overseas medical expenses cover for your domestic cruise, and our domestic plans exclude cover for any medical expenses in Australia. Still got questions about which destination to pick when getting a quote? See below for more details on how to choose your cruise destination.
- Next, choose the dates of your trip, add the age of the traveller(s) you want to include, and then select ‘Get quote’. We told you it was easy!
- Now you can select the best plan for you, including whether you want a single trip policy or an annual multi-trip policy if the option is available.
- You’ll then be asked if you are travelling for two or more nights on a sea or ocean cruise. If you’re reading this because you’re interested in our Cruise Cover and going on a cruise for two or more nights, the answer to this question will need to be ‘Yes’ for cover to be added to your policy. If you select ‘No’, you’ll have no cover for anything related to your cruise. Eek! Slightly-boring-but-important information: if you include our Cruise Cover in your policy, an additional premium will apply. Oh, and you’ll see this cover listed on your Certificate of Insurance when it arrives in your inbox along with other important policy information.
- Continue to follow the prompts to complete your policy purchase (read: tell us your details, declare your existing medical conditions, tell us how you want to pay), and then purchase your policy. Easy.
Additional helpful information on how to choose the correct destination when getting a quote for our Cruise Cover:
- If you’re cruising within Australia on an inland waterway (e.g. a Murray River cruise) or within Australian coastal waters (e.g. a Kimberley cruise where the cruise does not leave these waters), please chose or enter ‘Australia’ for a domestic plan. You don’t need our Cruise Cover for this type of cruise – your base plan will provide the cover you need. (You’re welcome!)
- If you're cruising from a port in Australia to another port(s) in Australia and the cruise ship does not stop at a port outside of Australia (e.g. a cruise from Sydney to Brisbane or a Kimberley cruise that leaves Australian waters), please choose or enter ‘Domestic cruising’ as you’ll need an international plan to ensure you’ve got our Overseas Medical and Dental (including emergency repatriation/evacuation) cover in your policy.
- If you're cruising overseas, possibly stopping in many destinations (e.g. a European river cruise, a Caribbean cruise, or a cruise from Hong Kong to Sydney) or cruising from a port in Australia to another port or ports outside Australia (e.g. Sydney to Singapore), please enter every country you will be travelling to or enter a region.
Absolutely. When you ask for a quote, you will take the same online medical assessment all our travellers go through, whether they are going on a cruise or not.
If we’re happy to provide cover for your medical condition(s), and you pay any extra premium to us as part of your policy cost, we will be able to offer you cover for your pre-existing medical condition(s).
Oh, and if you decide to tell us about some medical conditions and not others, you run the risk of a claim being denied as a result. Don’t say we didn’t tell you!
Want to know more? Our existing medical conditions page has a brilliant list of conditions we automatically provide cover for. For anything that’s not on this list, you may – or may not! – have to pay a little extra to include the cover in your policy. Take the online medical assessment during the quote process to find out.
Good to know: If we do not approve one or more of your existing medical conditions, we can still provide cover for other travel mishaps such as lost luggage and travel documents, and any illness or injury not relating to your existing medical condition. Awesome, huh?
Even when you have set your compass to cruise for two nights or more, sometimes you won’t need our Cruise Cover. Yes, in some situations your base plan can provide you with what you need!
If you are:
- not travelling on a cruise ship on the sea or ocean
- travelling on a ferry
- cruising on Australian or international rivers (e.g. on the Murray River, the Rhine, or the Danube River)
- sailing in Australian waters on a boat with sails
…then our Cruise Cover is not required.
Oh, and if you’re travelling on a cruise for one night only, you won’t need to add our Cruise Cover to your policy. Consider it a little thank you for choosing to take us on your getaway.
Good to know: Sorry, but we don’t cover sailing (on a boat with sails) in international waters – only in Australian coastal waters and the coastal waters of other countries.
You may not like this, but that’s a hard no.
Cruise ships often don't have to have doctors on board who are registered to practice in Australia. So, if you’re unwell and visit a doctor on board, it likely won’t be covered by Medicare, and you may end up with out-of-pocket expenses. No one wants that, right?
That’s why you should consider taking out travel insurance for any cruises you take in Australia so you’ve got cover for unexpected medical costs.
But why should you choose our domestic cruise travel insurance cover? So you can sail more and worry less, of course! Plus, it’s easy to buy. Simply select enter/select ‘Domestic cruising’ as your travel area when getting a quote and we’ll provide you with our international plans for your domestic cruise, which include overseas medical expenses cover. This means if you do need a doc on board your domestic cruise, we’ll be here to help.
