While domestic travel insurance does not cover medical expenses, with the exception of cruises, many other benefits still apply. More than one third of domestic travellers experience an unexpected circumstance that can leave them out of pocket. Your luggage can be stolen as easily in Perth as it can in Paris. If your child becomes unwell and you need to cancel your trip, it does not matter if you were travelling to Brisbane or Barcelona.
Here are some real-life Cover-More stories of customers who were able to claim under their domestic policy:
There are always risks when you travel even on domestic trips. Find out how affordable cover can be by getting a quote online or call our team on 1300 72 88 22. We can help you find the plan that best suits your needs.

The Domestic plan provides comprehensive travel insurance designed for domestic travel. You can choose the plan best for you, such as including add-on protection for Winter Sports, Motorcycle/Moped riding, or increase your luggage limits and rental car excess coverage. The Domestic plan includes benefits that can cover:
If you have a tight budget, the Domestic Cancellation plan offers basic travel insurance that protects you against the loss of pre-paid deposits and cancellation fees. No other benefits apply to Domestic Cancellation policies. It can cover you for:

To purchase domestic travel insurance on our website, select ‘Australia’ as your destination in the quote box. Do not choose ‘Australia Inbound’ unless you are an international person visiting Australia. Fill in the rest of your travel details and then click ‘Get Quote’ for a price.
Enter in the remainder of your details including information about Existing Medical Conditions and finalise your policy.
If you are going on a cruise in Australian waters, select ‘Domestic Cruise’ as your destination – you will then have an international policy that includes cover for medical expenses outside of Australia on the cruise.
After you have generated a price by submitting your travel details in the quote box, you will need to select the Cruise cover add-on to your policy.
You can then finalise your travel insurance and get ready to set sail! If you need assistance with finding the right policy for you, call us on 1300 72 88 22.
Cover-More policies can offer coverage in case you need to cancel your trip within Australia for an unexpected reason. The Domestic Plan has a benefit for amendments and cancellation costs up to $10,000. For a lower premium, you can select a Domestic Cancellation policy that provides cancellation coverage up to $1,500.
There is no medical cover available to you under Domestic policies in Australia while onshore. This is standard across all travel insurers. We are unable to cover your medical expenses incurred within Australia if you are an Australian resident or eligible overseas representative. We encourage you to contact Medicare or your private health fund to discuss the medical coverage options available to you.
With that said, we can provide medical cover to you while on a cruise holiday. Medicare and private health funds do not cover medical facilities on a cruise ship, which is where we come in. If you are going on a domestic cruise, cover can be offered for unforeseen medical expenses while on board. You will need to add the Cruise extra to your travel insurance policy for this to apply.
Cruises are a great holiday option for families, seniors and everyone else in between. If you are about to set sail on a domestic cruise, consider purchasing cruise travel insurance for peace of mind. Make sure you choose Domestic Cruise as your destination in the quote box and then select the Cruise add-on for cover to apply. You are able to choose the excess amount from either $0, $100 or $250.
Medicare or your private health insurance will not cover the costs of using the medical facilities on a cruise ship, even if it is staying within Australian territorial waters. This means you may be out of pocket if you need to see a doctor unexpectedly while on board.
You can add Cruise cover to your Domestic Plan by paying an additional premium. By choosing the cruise travel insurance add-on, you can be covered for unforeseen medical expenses, cancellation and lost luggage.
We know holidays can be expensive, so you can select a Medical Only plan for a lower premium. You will still need to add Cruise cover when setting up your policy. This type of coverage only protects you against unexpected medical expenses while on board.
Being pregnant does not necessarily mean you have to stop travelling. Cover-More can provide travel insurance for pregnancy up to the 24th week (23 weeks, 6 days). If you are buying travel insurance while pregnant, you will need to fill in a medical assessment to apply for cover if:
If you purchased your travel insurance before finding out you were pregnant, you will not need to do anything. Keep in mind that you will have to provide supporting documentation from your doctor if you become unfit to travel and need to claim for cancellation.
There is no medical coverage available on our Domestic Plans, unless you are going on a domestic cruise and have added Cruise cover. There is no cover for childbirth or the health of a newborn child on any of our Plans. Other policy benefits can safeguard your trip against expenses arising from lost luggage, travel delays and cancellation.
Why not consider a domestic holiday if you want to squeeze in a babymoon and take one last trip? It is a great way to relax and see more of our beautiful country. Make sure you are aware of any airline restrictions for pregnant travellers before booking your getaway.
Now that you have retired and your family have flown the nest, your ‘golden years’ are an ideal time to see the world. Start with domestic destinations that you have always wanted to see. Cover-More can provide quality seniors travel insurance if you are younger than 99 years old. Just remember that reduced limits may apply for travellers over 70 years of age. A great way to see Australia is by hitting the road! For your next domestic holiday, you may want to consider hiring a rental car. Our Domestic Plan automatically provides up to $4,000 cover if you become liable to pay a rental car insurance excess. You can increase this coverage limit up to a further $3,500 by paying an additional premium.
This cover applies if you:
As Cover-More will cover the rental car excess up to the policy limit; you may not have to pay an extra fee to the rental car company to reduce your excess. This means more money in your pocket to spend while on holidays!
Please keep in mind that under Cover-More plans, we will not pay for:
We strongly encourage you to read the Product Disclosure Statement so you are aware of what is included in the plans.
Mishaps and events outside of your control can happen as easily in Australia as they can while you are on holidays overseas. You can get cover for luggage and travel documents, rental car insurance excess, additional expenses, and amendment or cancellation costs.
No. The costs for medical treatment, dental treatment or ambulance transportation provided in Australia are not covered under the Domestic Plan or Domestic Cancellation Plan. Travel insurance providers are unable to provide cover for medical expenses incurred within Australia by an Australian resident or eligible overseas representative. The exception is for domestic cruises, where unforeseen medical expenses on board a cruise ship may be covered if you have selected Domestic Cruising for the area of travel and included the Cruise cover add-on to your plan.
A $50 excess applies to the Domestic Plan. You are not able to change this amount. If you have selected a Domestic Cruise policy, you can choose an excess of $0, $100 or $250. The higher the excess you pick, the lower the premium. An excess is the first part of a claim that we will not pay. The excess amount is applied to each separate claimable event.
